The Benefits of a Working Riding Holiday
for Women over 40

Nicky Hoseck

It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that adventure travel is the exclusive preserve of the young, but that’s simply not true. It's the exclusive preserve of the young at heart.

Truth be told, the benefits you'll gain from a working riding holiday in your forties are probably double those you'd have appreciated in your twenties.

Sure, many horse-related volunteer programs are aimed at twenty-somethings, but here on the Wild Coast, we like to keep an open mind, and for good reason. If you're getting plenty out of the experience, chances are, so are we.

Why Horse Riding is Better Exercise Than You Realise

So, what makes a working riding holiday such a rewarding experience for women over 40? It's a unique combination of everything that's good for us: spending time with horses, being outside in nature, trying something new, and enjoying the physical and mental benefits of riding every day.

To the uninformed eye, horse riding doesn't look particularly strenuous, but us horse riders know different. We know that if we really did "just sit there", we wouldn't be so sore after an hour in the saddle! Yet even though we defend our sport so passionately, we still tend to underestimate just how much of a workout it really is.

Horse riding is one of the few sports that works almost every part of the body, whether you notice it or not. Riding well requires balance, coordination, core stability, flexibility, strength and quick reactions, which means you're making hundreds of tiny adjustments without even realising it. Not only do you have to maintain your posture while demonstrating at least a modicum of coordination, but you also have to constantly adjust your balance—especially when you're riding an Arab on a windy day!

Of course, a 20-year-old enjoys those same physical benefits; they're just slightly less likely to appreciate them. As we get older, maintaining our balance, strength and coordination becomes increasingly important, not only for staying active but for protecting our long-term health.

Studies increasingly show that balance, lower-body strength and coordination are closely linked to brain health, helping to reduce the risk of falls, cognitive decline and conditions such as dementia. Riding doesn't just keep your muscles working; it challenges the communication between your brain and body with every single stride.

And unlike a gym workout, you rarely notice you're exercising. You're far too busy enjoying the ride, especially when that ride takes place on an empty beach on South Africa's Wild Coast.

Adventure Is Good for Your Health

So, you might be thinking, "Fine, I'll just go to my local riding school once a week." And you'd absolutely gain some of the same benefits. But nowhere near as many as you'd get by travelling to South Africa and spending a week or two on a working riding holiday.

Why? Because when you come to the Wild Coast, you get so much more than the chance to ride. You immerse yourself in a different culture, meet like-minded people from around the world, and experience what it truly means to ride, connect and belong. For a little while, you become part of the herd, embracing a way of life that's probably very different from the one you left behind. And that kind of reset, stepping away from everyday routines and responsibilities, has some surprising and very real health benefits.

Research has shown that regular holidays can lower stress hormones, reduce blood pressure and even decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Simply taking a break from everyday life gives both your mind and body the chance to recharge.

But a working riding holiday goes one step further. Rather than simply relaxing by a pool, you'll spend your days outdoors, breathing the fresh sea air and that unmistakable scent of horses. You'll help exercise, care for and train the horses, playing a genuine role in their development as trail horses while learning new skills yourself.

It's an opportunity to step away from screens, close the laptop and immerse yourself in something tangible and meaningful. At the end of the day, you'll go to bed physically tired, mentally refreshed, and already looking forward to what tomorrow brings.

How Horses Bring Us Back To Ourselves

Women in their forties know what it means to have responsibilities. Many have families to care for and support, demanding careers, bills to pay, gyms to attend, and friends to keep up with. They often find themselves looking after everybody else while forgetting to make time for themselves.

Being around horses can help reset that internal clock. Instead of responding to the pressures and expectations of everyone else, horses ask us to leave it all behind and stay in the moment. They'll meet us in the now, reflecting our true selves back to us, if we're prepared to see it.

When you're riding, grooming or simply spending time in the yard, your attention naturally shifts to the present. There's no room for worrying about tomorrow's meeting or yesterday's problems when a 500kg animal is asking for your full attention.

For many of our guests, that's one of the greatest gifts of all.

Rediscover Your Adventurous Spirit

Somewhere between careers, mortgages, raising children and life's endless responsibilities, many women stop putting themselves first. The demands on their time become so overwhelming that other parts of their identity, like that adventurous spirit, gradually get tucked away.

But it never really disappears. Sometimes, it just needs an excuse to come back out.

A working riding holiday is a chance to remember that adventurous version of yourself and give her an excuse to climb back into the saddle.

Whether it's cantering along an empty beach, learning to ride a new horse, crossing a river or simply spending a week surrounded by people who love horses as much as you do, you'll leave with far more than photographs.

You'll leave feeling stronger, calmer, more confident and perhaps just a little more like yourself again.
