Top 5 Hidden Places You’ll Discover
on the Wild Coast Horse Trail

The Wild Coast is a mystery to many, which is why it feels so exclusive when you arrive. It’s a part of South Africa that, due to both its geography and its history, has remained largely hidden from view. It harbours an ancient way of life — one that follows tides rather than TikTok videos, weather patterns instead of notifications, and the quiet calls of nature over the noise of modern life.

With its sweeping beaches and rolling green hills, it feels vast, untamed, and full of possibility. But beyond the obvious beauty lies something even more special — the hidden corners you’d never find on your own.

While Wild Coast Horses may not be the only ones offering trails along this coastline, we’re the ones who’ve been doing it the longest and most consistently. One of the benefits of that is knowing our little stretch of the Wild Coast more intimately than anyone beyond those who live here.

Need an alternative route across a river? Our guides will find you one. Want to visit a secret waterfall? They know exactly where to go. It’s this kind of insider knowledge that turns a ride into something far more than a trail — it’s what allows us to take you off the beaten track and into places that feel completely undiscovered.

Come closer for a moment and listen carefully because we’re about to reveal five of our favourite secret spots on the Wild Coast. We won’t tell you how to get there - we don’t want to spoil it - but we will tell you what to expect when you reach your destination!

#1 Gxara Falls

Lying close to Qolora Mouth, Gxara Falls is celebrated as much for its history as for its natural beauty — which, as you can see from the photos, is nothing short of staggering. Visit during the rainy season, and it quickly becomes a “wild swimming on steroids” kind of experience! Brave enough to peer over the edge? Watch as the water plunges into the deep ravine below, where it miraculously softens into an almost idyllic pool, framed by ancient trees.

But this place holds more than just beauty. It’s woven into the story of one of the most dramatic and tragic chapters in local history — the Xhosa Cattle Killings of 1856, a moment that reshaped the fate of an entire people and whose ghosts still hover along the coastline.

Think I’m going to tell the full story here? Not a chance. Some places deserve to be experienced properly. You’ll have to come on trail and let one of our guides bring it to life for you.

#2 Morgan Bay Cliffs

OK, so the krandtzes of Morgan Bay aren’t so much of a secret and can be just as easily accessed on foot as they can by horse or even car. But the only way to see them on horseback is with Wild Coast Horses, so that gives us a sense of ownership over this place of breathtaking beauty.

The views are the most obvious reason for heading up there, and they never fail to impress. Gaze out over Morgan Bay’s long golden beach towards the lighthouse, or turn the other way and take in Double Mouth, stretching on to Marshstrand and beyond.

Aside from the views, however, the cliffs have their own quiet secrets — a pond dotted with waterlilies, a narrow track slipping down into a pocket of coastal forest, or the occasional rock dassie somehow defying gravity on the edge.

It’s these small, unexpected discoveries that make the krantz feel less like a viewpoint and more like a place to explore — especially when you’re seeing it all from the back of a horse, with the wind in your face and the waves crashing far below.

#3 Shixini River Mouth

There are parts of the Wild Coast you simply can’t miss — the towering sand dunes at Mazeppa Bay or the strange brick shipwreck north of Kob Inn. But there are others you could ride straight past without ever realising they were there — and the Shixini River Mouth is one of them.

It’s a proper climb to the top, but our endurance-fit horses take it in their stride. And once you’re up there, the reward is more than worth it. The view opens out into something extraordinary — river, lagoon, ravine, and sea all layered into one sweeping, untamed landscape.

If you’re feeling brave, you can edge your way out to the furthest point and pose for a photo in a place so vast it makes your horse look like a toy. It’s the kind of spot that reminds you just how small you are — in the best possible way.

Come in winter, and the steep sides of the ravine glow with the blood-red flowers of aloes, adding yet another layer of drama to a place that already feels wildly, quietly unforgettable.

#4 The Other Waterfall

We don’t talk about the other waterfall very often — partly because it’s not on our regular trail route, and partly because, if we’re honest, we’d quite like to keep it to ourselves. Tucked away on the Kobanqaba River, a few kilometres upstream from our usual crossing, they’re about as remote and far-flung as it gets… and even saying that might be giving too much away.

There are moments on the Wild Coast when rain and tides conspire to turn a simple river crossing from adventurous to borderline perilous. It’s at times like these that our guides dig deep into their local knowledge and pull a few well-practised rabbits out of the hat — and one of those just happens to be the “other” waterfall.

It’s not a planned highlight. It’s not guaranteed. And that’s exactly what makes it so special. Those who’ve seen it never forget it — and those who haven’t can barely imagine it.

#5 Wavecrest Beach

Again, this isn’t exactly a secret — not when so many riders have shared footage of their heart-pounding gallops along its 2 km stretch. What keeps it feeling hidden, though, is the sensation itself. It’s a lot like the “other” waterfall: if you haven’t experienced it, it’s hard to imagine. But once you have, there’s a very good chance you’ll be itching to do it all over again! If you know what I’m talking about, we’ll see you again soon!
