The Ultimate Guide to a Working Riding Holiday

Curious about a working riding holiday? Our expert guide explains what to expect, who it suits, and how it works, helping you decide if this immersive, hands-on horse experience is right for you. For over 20 years, Wild Coast Horse Trails has been hosting riders, combining professional guiding with a passion for adventure to ensure every holiday is safe, fun, and unforgettable.

What is a Working Riding Holiday?

A working riding holiday falls somewhere between a riding holiday and a volunteer or gap-year experience. They’re usually longer than your average week-long trail ride and far more immersive than simply riding a horse twice a day, especially one that’s been prepared for you by someone else.

The big clue is in the name: working riding holiday. Yes, you really can work and have a holiday at the same time! After all, if work usually means tapping away at a laptop, brushing a horse will feel like a holiday.

And that’s just the beginning.

Most working riding holidays offer a little bit of everything: hands-on experience with horses, the chance to develop your riding skills in a new environment or culture, and the freedom to step away from “real life” and get back to basics.

Who is a Working Riding Holiday For?

A common misconception is that you have to be somewhere between 18 and 30, to enjoy a working riding holiday. In reality, people of all ages and backgrounds embrace these experiences as a way out of the standard riding school routine and into something deeper and more rewarding.

Yes, you’ll learn plenty, but not in a traditional classroom setting. Workshop-style sessions cover the fundamentals of T-touch, but most lessons like join-up, and other training techniques,  happen “on the hoof.” From tying a quick-release knot to understanding a two-point girth system, you’ll pick up practical skills that make riding (and life) easier.

Safety and Horse Welfare

Our horses are trained and cared for to the highest standards, living a natural life with plenty of freedom. There are no stalls to muck out or paddocks to poo-pick, but you will get your hands dirty. All rides and equine interactions are supervised by experienced guides who ensure your safety and the horses’ well-being, making every experience enjoyable, enriching, and stress-free.

What to Expect in the Saddle

The riding itself is the heart of the holiday. You’ll take experienced trail horses out for exercise rides, more novice horses for gentle walks, and enjoy some basic schooling sessions. Morning rides may lead to local haunts where canters and coffee go hand in hand; for instance, visiting the cliffs in Morgan Bay and sampling the pizzas at a local eatery.

Day rides take you deeper into the rural Wild Coast, where beaches stretch empty for miles. You’ll swim in waterfalls, splash through rivers, explore coastal forests, and kick up dust on disused airstrips. This is riding without fences, with freedom, and where the only rules are there to keep you and your horse safe and happy.

Life Beyond the Saddle

Even when you’re not at the yard, our guides are on hand to show you the ropes and a good time. Want to try a game of pool? No problem. Join in a game of bowls, practice your dance moves at the local pub… or simply kick back with a sunset drink and swap stories with fellow riders. A working riding holiday isn’t just about horses. It’s about connection, adventure, and memories that stay with you long after the boots are hung up.

How Flexible is a Working Riding Holiday?

How you shape your holiday is entirely up to you. Every Sunday is your day off — a chance to soak up the sun on the beach, unwind by the splash pool in the garden, treat yourself to a massage, or visit a nearby game reserve to spend time with some other four-legged friends.

If there’s a specific activity you’d like to arrange — a game drive, abseiling experience, kayak trip, or guided fishing tour — just let us know. We’ll help you organise it and adjust your schedule so everything fits seamlessly into your stay.

There are also several local restaurants and coffee shops to explore, whether you’re after a quick lunchtime bite or a full three-course meal. Perfect for those days when you don’t feel like cooking or simply fancy a change of scene.

Our self-catered working riding holidays cater to riders of all levels, from confident beginners to experienced equestrians, and include accommodation, guided rides, and optional workshops. They’re fun, flexible, and designed to give you a fresh perspective on horses, riding, and life in general.

If you stay for 4 weeks or longer, you’ll receive a complimentary T-Touch workshop with Klara Webb. If you can’t spare that much time, you’re still welcome to join a workshop if one is scheduled during your stay.

The same goes for our trails — if one is running while you’re here, you’re very welcome to join it as an add-on to your stay. Trail participation can be booked separately, giving you the freedom to decide whether you’d like to include that extra adventure in your experience.

Staying Longer: Pros and Cons

Come for 4 to 9 weeks or more, and you’ll get to join one of our Mini Beach Trails for free! Stay anywhere between 10 and 12 weeks, and you’ll get to ride the 8-day Wild Coast Horse Trail as an assistant back-up rider. That means discovering even more of the Wild Coast, including the comforts and charms of various rural hotels, complete with leisurely meals and breathtaking views.

Even if you can’t spare that much time, you can still add a trail to your working riding holiday so you don’t miss out. And the longer you stay, the more you become part of the herd!

Just be warned - the longer you stay, the harder the goodbyes! Expect to fall in love with at least one horse (if not 30), make friendships that last a lifetime, learn lessons you’ll never forget, and create memories you’ll revisit whenever life needs a little magic.
