As secure as they are, even Liversage saddles slip backwards on some horses, especially when they’re scaling some of the steep inclines we encounter along the Wild Coast. Some horses are also more conformationally challenged than others, boasting broad chests or high withers that make saddle fitting that bit more difficult.
To alleviate these problems and to provide an extra layer of safety and stability, every Wild Coast horse wears a carefully fitted breastplate. Not only does this help prevent saddle slippage, but it also ensures the rider’s weight is positioned correctly over the horse's centre of gravity, regardless of the terrain.
Our breastplates are predominantly hunting or y-type and feature a running martingale attachment that prevents the horse from lifting his head too high. There are several advantages to this. First, it stops the horse from lifting its head and evading the bit, ensuring the rider has control even if the horse gets a little fresh on a beach canter! It also helps protect our horses’ mouths from inexperienced hands that may accidentally jerk or pull on the reins to remain stable in the saddle.
