Based in the laid-back seaside village of Kei Mouth, this ride is ideal for travellers short on time or passing through on a South African road trip. With personalised itineraries and options for all riding levels—from relaxed beach ambles to spirited canters—you’ll experience the Wild Coast your way.

Stay at our welcoming guesthouse, ride well-schooled horses, and explore the beauty of river crossings, cliff paths, and endless beaches at a pace that suits you.

Suggested itinerary options

On our Kei River Trail guests will explore the local area of Kei Mouth and Morgan Bay, and more experienced riders will be able to cross the Great Kei River on the ferry and day ride to Waterfalls and get a taste of the endless Wild Coast beaches. 

This is the perfect horseback holiday for those riders wishing to experience the pleasure of riding along the stunning beaches of the Wild Coast.  There is a morning and afternoon ride or full  day ride each day. Morning rides last 2 to 3 hours (or less if requested) and afternoon rides are normally shorter. Rides are tailor-made to suit the needs of our guests and we try to be as flexible as possible. 
This trail is ideal for mixed groups of riders and families.  There is plenty to do for non riders:  there are beautiful walks,  a super golf course, hiking and mountain bike trails, birding, river cruise, abseiling, rock & surf fishing and deep sea fishing charters are also available.

The Kei River trail caters for all level of rider from experienced to beginner. Great for singles, couples, guests with mixed riding abilities and families. No fixed dates, rides are tailored to suit your needs and riding ability. 

PLEASE NOTE All riding and itineraries are subject to change due to variations in local conditions, hotel accommodation availability, rider’s abilities, the weather & the influences of the sea tides and during the rainy season the conditions of the rivers at the time of riding.

Full Board Accommodation & Meals

You stay at Kei Mouth Guest House,  you will enjoy relaxed informal hospitality. 

All meals are included:
Breakfast is your choice of continental and/or full English. Lunch changes from day to day, it could be a pub lunch, a light lunch somewhere, or a saddle bag picnic along the way. Dinner could be home cooked roast, casserole type dishes,  local fresh fish,  or we might treat you to eat out at one of our local restaurants. 

Self Catering Options

A self-catering option is available for those who want the freedom and flexibility to to do their own thing and enjoy other activities and chill time.   If you want to ride and bring your none riding family, they can enjoy Deep Sea Fishing Charters, walks, hikes, mountain biking, rock & surf fishing, Kayaking, birding and of course our lovely beaches. 

There is a lovely selection of local restaurants if you prefer to eat out.

Price and package details 2025 and 2026

6 January to 12 December 2025 (last arrival date) ~ R4660.00 per person per night

5 January to 11 December 2026 (last arrival date) ~ R4950.00 per person per night

Includes - This is a fully hosted package. 1 lunch, 1 dinner, 1 breakfast, accommodation at Kei Mouth Guest Lodge or similar type of holiday home, horse riding. (Horse riding is an afternoon and morning ride or full day ride.)
Exclusions airport transfers, drinks at local bars, restaurants and hotels, spa treatments and items of a personal nature. (You are welcome to bring your own drinks, there is a Tops liquor store nearby.)

Riding level and ability.

The Kei River Trail is for a wide range of confident riders and guests are comfortable in walk, trot and canter for up to 2 to 3 hours in the saddle at a time.   We have a lovely selection of horses that suit a wide range of riding abilities from confident novice level up. Riding a horse does require a degree of natural fitness and balance.
The weight limit is 90 kg

Your riding ability is required on the booking form.
BEGINNER RIDER = someone who is comfortable in the saddle & can stay on a reliable well-school horse. They can post to the trot (go up and down) and may have cantered a few times. Beginners generally ride once or twice a year on holiday with their partner!

NOVICE RIDER = someone who is comfortable in the saddle & enjoys a reliable well-schooled horse. They generally ride at a riding school once or twice a month, or like to ride a friend’s horse on the farm. They can post to trot comfortably and enjoy a nice controlled canter.

INTERMEDIATE RIDER = someone who rides regularly and enjoys a forward well-schooled horse. They may or may not be a little nervous for the first little bit while they get to know their horse. They can control their horse independently and are confident trotting and in controlled canters.

EXPERIENCED RIDER = someone who is comfortable on most horses in most situations. They ride regularly and may or may not have their own horse. They have a good seat and gentle hands. They can ride in the light seats and can hold a strong horse in a fast canter.
